Walking On Rivers (Magnum and Ideastap Photographic Award 2014)

The journey started by the river Congo, in Brazzaville, when the Boukono family escaped civil war in 1998. Fifteen years later their journey ended by another river when the family moved into a house facing the Iijoki in Finland, so far north you can walk on its frozen waters in wintertime. Pudasjärvi, their new hometown, has a rapidly shrinking population, and the council hopes for more migrants to move in. The series follows the Boukonos as their first winter in Finland is coming to an end. Interlaced in the story are photographs that have made a long and improbable journey with the family.
